CITC’s VR (Virtual Reality) Malay House Walkthrough in WiC (World Invention Innovation Contest )2016 , Seoul Korea
On 5 – 6 June 2016, a team from the Centre of Immersive Technology and Creativity’s (CITC) VR division demonstrated their project entitled VR Malay House Walkthrough at the 2nd World Invention Innovation Contest 2016. It took place at the Convention Centre - Chung Mu Art Hall, Seoul, Korea. The team comprised of Mr Aloysius Yapp and Ms Lim Chai Kim, both lecturers from Faculty of Creative Industries' (FCI) Game Studies Department.
Their invention in VR and CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) walkthrough was selected to be in the silver award category. It also brought them a special award from the Korea Invention Academy. The project which was awarded and presented in the exhibition carried significance in the context of culture and heritage preservation by new media. The VR and CGI approach allow users to interact and be more immersed in an environment.
Mr Aloysius Yapp, came out with the initial concept and idea. He created digital art and 3D models of the Malay houses to be assets in a 3D environment walkthrough. Using a game engine, Ms Lim Chai Kim created the 3D environment and programmed the interactive components.
It is a practice led research project which combined creative design in digital visualization, 3D modeling and programming to materialize the VR Malay House Walkthrough.
The team is also invited to join the World Invention Innovation Contest in Toronto Canada 2016.
